Work is based on stories about lives of 2nd world war heroines from Bosnia and Herzegovina found in the book “Heroines” (“Žene heroji”, edited by Mila Beoković in 1967), namely Marija Bursać and Ravijojla Rava Janković. According to the testimonies in the book, Marija Bursać made a first village flag out of her red silk skirt she wore only once. In contrast, Ravijojla Janković sewed herself a skirt out of a silk of an enemy parachute.

Imala sam suknju.
Od crvene svile suknju.
Jednom sam je nosila.
Nisu to bila vremena  za
suknje,
a i omladina sela nije imala zastavu.

Rasporila sam svoju

suknju
i žutim koncem izvezla
srp,
čekić i
petokraku.

Na idućem sreskom zboru moja se
suknja
vijorila na čelu kolone.

I had a skirt.
A skirt made of red silk.
Only once I wore it.
Those were not times for
skirts,
and the youth of my village did not have their flag.

I ripped my skirt
and with yellow  thread I embroidered
a sickle,
hammer and
star.

On the next county choir, my red
skirt
waved at the head of the column.

Jednog dana, dok sam
zadovoljna koračala u novoj
suknji
što sam je od padobranske svile sašila,
susrela sam druga suborca,
Mitra Minića.
Začuđen me pogledao i pitao šta će meni
suknja,
kad je nijedna drugarica ne nosi.
A meni se sviđala
suknja.
I padobranska svila.
Sjetila me na grad i da ću tamo ići.
Da ću biti lijepo obučena.

One day as I
marched spritely
in the new
skirt
that I sewed out of parachute silk,

I met a fellow soldier,
Mitar Minić.

Amazed, he looked at me and asked why the
skirt

when no other comrades wear it.
I liked the
skirt

and the parachute silk.
I dreamt about going to town – that I
would go there

and be nicely dressed

Ravijojla Rava Janković
